  • When hearing the Fire Alarm…

    1. Exit the building via the nearest fire exit (DO NOT RUN!)
    2. Do not go to the canteen or collect your belongings
    3. Do not tackle the fire unless you have been trained
    4. Assemble at your designated Fire Assembly Point in the Car Park
    5. Wait for the Fire Marshall to call out your name
    6. Return to the building ONLY if the Fire Marshall confirms that it is safe to do so

    If you see a fire…

    1. Raise the alarm by pressing the red button next to the Fire Exit
    2. Leave the building and assemble at your Fire Assembly Point
    3. Explain to the Fire Marshall the exact location and nature of the fire

    At all times, know where is your closest fire exit and your designated assembly point!

    MANUAL HANDLING INJURIES

    Back Injuries – around 60% of all manual injuries. Can result in pain, disability, loss of mobility and strength, damage to the nervous system, disc damage
    Stomach & groin injuries
    From dropped loads – Crushed fingers and toes, lacerations, bruising, broken bones etc

  • Manual Handling - Procedure

  • LIFTING OPERATION

    1. Clear the area
    2. Check the load – Sharp edges, staples, splinters etc
    3. Size up the load – Read the label, move, rock etc
    4. Check the load is within your capability
    5. Position your feet (about shoulder width and stable)
    6. Bend your knees – Legs strongest part of body
    7. Obtain a proper grip
    8. Back straight- Head level looking ahead
    9. Lift using legs, keeping back straight

    PUSH/PULL OPERATION

    1. Check area and clear as required
    2. Check wheels, rollers etc. are operating – rock back & forth
    3. Size up the load
    4. Check visibility – Can you see where you're going?
    5. Do you need help or assistance?
    6. Take a firm stance prior to exerting pressure to the load
    7. Control the pace of the load movement
    8. Look out for obstructions, obstacles or floor defects

  • Personal Protective Equipment

  • WHY?

    PPE is needed to protect against hazards that cannot be eliminated or substituted by other engineering controls

    Employer’s Responsibility…

    Is to ensure suitable PPE is provided to employees, who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work

    Employee’s Responsibility…

    To use/wear any PPE that is required to carry out a certain task as outlined in the training manual

    Training will include:

    • Why PPE is necessary
    • How PPE should be used
    • Where PPE should be kept
    • PPE should not be shared
    • PPE should not be charged for
    • PPE has to be signed for

    When does training take place:

    • When starting work at a new station
    • Following a change to a process
    • Following an introduction of a new process

  • PPE in GWI
    • The team leader will issue PPE
    • Gloves can be utilised more than once
    • DO NOT take out a new pair of gloves every day without a valid reason
    • Only get a new pair, if the gloves are no longer serving their purpose (holes, rips etc)
    • Do not share the gloves
  • Noise

  • The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require employers to prevent or reduce risks to health and safety from exposure to noise at work.

    The Regulations require employers to:

    • Assess the risks to employees from noise at work
    • Reduce the noise exposure that produces those risks
    • Provide hearing ear protection if the noise exposure cannot be reduced enough by using other methods
    • Make sure the legal limits on noise exposure are not exceeded
    • Provide workers with information instruction and training
    • Carry out health surveillance where there is a risk to health

    The following levels of daily or weekly exposure require action as stated in the Regulations:

    • Lower exposure of 80 dB(A)
    • Upper exposure of 85 dB(A)

    It is company policy for hearing protection to be worn on operations over 80 dB(A).

    Maintenance operations:
    Band Saw 83 dB(A)
    Chop Saws 102 dB(A)

    Production operations:
    Meter Preparation Booth 100 dB(A)
    Meter Spray Booth 95 dB(A)
    Meter Opening Area 82 dB(A)

  • Sharps

  • All equipment and tooling are covered by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998

    Knives in GWI are a controlled item and should only be issued to personnel with the agreement of the safety officer, who is trained and recorded on the register

    When using SHARPS:

    1. Always work away from your body
    2. Be aware of your other hand
    3. Wear appropriate PPE as laid down in work instructions and risk assessments
    4. Any authorised sharps, knives, scrapers etc., should always be stored in a locker when not in use
    5. Ensure the blade is retracted or protected before putting in your pocket
    6. Do not bring your own equipment on site!

  • Spillage Procedure

  • ISO 14001- Environmental Management System
    requires we have a procedure in place to contain/control spillages, a recording system and personnel trained in actions should a spillage occur.
    There are 2 types of Spillage Kits available on the shop floor for containment of any spillages of chemicals and substances and to prevent ingress into the drainage system.

  • SPILL KITS CONTAIN:
    • Absorbent granules
    • Absorbent sheet
    • Absorbent boom (cotton type material tube)
    • Wheelie Bin (Contains above materials and PPE)
    • Drain covers
    • Internal stands (Contain above materials)
  • What to do when discovering a spillage…

    1. Raise the alarm (report to Team Leader)
    2. Locate the nearest spillage kit, remove the boom or granules and place it on/around the spillage to contain and stop the spread of the spillage
    3. Consult your safety data sheet to identify if any PPE is required
    4. Be aware of other hazards (electricity cables etc) and locate any isolation valves (ensure they are closed)
    5. If necessary, get some help and if possible, reposition the container to stop or reduce the flow of the liquid
    6. Apply the necessary absorbent material
    7. When the liquid has been absorbed transfer the waste to the appropriate bin
    8. The Team leader is to ensure the spillage kit is material replenished and the Spillage report has been logged

  • GDPR Principles

    The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect in 2018 and is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individual citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area.

    There are six main points from the GDPR regulations:

    1. Lawfulness, fairness and transparency - personal data must be processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to the data subject.
    2. Purpose limitation - personal data should only be collected for a specific, explicit and legitimate purpose. It must be clearly stated what this purpose is, and data should only be collected for as long as necessary to complete that purpose.
    3. Data minimisation - ensure that personal data processed is adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the processing purpose.
    4. Accuracy - every reasonable step must be taken to update or remove data that is inaccurate or incomplete. Individuals have the right to request that erroneous data that relates to them is rectified or erased, and must be done within a month.
    5. Storage limitation - personal data must be deleted when it is no longer needed. The timescales in most cases aren't set. They will depend on a business’ circumstances and the reasons why the data is collected.
    6. Integrity and confidentiality - personal data must be kept safe and protected against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures.
  • Physical Security

    Please be mindful of physical security measures and access to the site, to prevent unauthorised access.
    Any incidents should always be reported. Always report suspicious activity or persons on site to a manager and ensure it is relayed to the General Manager. Any incident or suspected incident involving a security breach, loss of data or equipment shall be reported to the IT and Information Security Officer or the Quality Manager

    If your absence is due to health issues, you need to contact Expedient to complete a RTW before you go back to work.

    Unauthorised absences can result in dismissal!

    All holidays must be authorised by the Team Leader (Shafiq) before you book them.
    Once you have the authorisation, please contact Expedient to let us know.
    All unauthorised holidays will be treated as absences and can result in dismissal.
